Software

Here's a list of software I've found useful

K3 CCD Tools by Peter Katriniac - Image capture and editing.
AstroStack2 by Robert J. Stekelenburg - Great image processing program.
AstroSnap by Axel Canicio - Capture and processing also a good autoguider with telescope control.
Astronomers Control Panel by DC3 Dreams - Enables computer control of various scopes.
ASU Meade's Autostar Software Update program.
Starry Night Excellent planetarium program with scope control - view comparisons in the Gallery.
Neat Image Software for removing noise inherent in CCD images - also available as a plug in for Photoshop.

ETX70 Starry Night FOV Indicators | Autostar Satellite Search Tours

ETX 70 Starry Night FOV Indicators

I have developed a set of Field Of View indicators for Starry Night to suit the ETX70 - they indicate the FOV for the 25mm, 9mm and 4mm eyepieces with and without 2x and 3x barlows (circular). Also included are Prime Focus when used with a standard SLR 35mm camera as well as Piggyback 210mm zoom lens and Piggyback 50mm lens (rectangular).
NEW- Have also included the LPI and LPI with 2x barlow
To use, download the zip file, decompress and move existing FOV Indicators file to the desktop (just in case!) and replace it with the downloaded file. It should be in your Starry Night data/prefs folder - search for the original to find the right place.
Macintosh users - as long as you can decompress the zipped file it should still work.
As with most alterations of this nature - you do so at your own risk - if they don't work for you place your old prefs back!

Autostar Satellite Search Tours

I found these two tours helpful for searching for satellite passes. The tour seaches a list of satellites which should be in the the Autostar handbox (download from Meade using ASU and install beforehand - visual and irdium satellite files). Once you select the tour and press mode it searches for meteor showers and lunar eclipse and then proceeds to search for satellites one by one. If no pass is located the next satellite is tried - once a pass is located the rise time is displayed - you can press GOTO to set up for the pass, scroll keys for more information or MODE to continue searching.
I find this method alot less tedious than selecting each satellite and searching each one manually.
To use, download the zip file, decompress and from ASU import them as tour files to transfer to the ETX.
There are 2 files:
Satellite Search - Searches for 50 satellites (updates from Meade Visual file)
Iridium Search - Searches for Iridium satellites (updates from the Meade Iridium file)

Note: Occasionally I've noticed the Autostar (494) seems to lock up while tracking an orbit which requires a restart - this may happen while running the above tours or doing a normal select/object/satellite search - it is not associated with the tours. It may be minimised by pressing mode after a few seconds of tracking to progress to the next satellite - passes in the near future should be located within 5-10 seconds.
